Prithviraj’s opinion is absolutely fine as it is an extremely private view and he has not said anything particularly offensive nor has he said anything to support the so called ‘believers’ in god, observes Lokakeralam.
Malayalam Super Star Prithviraj has found himself in the eye of a storm with his statement regarding Sabarimala. In an interview given to a mainstream women’s magazine he opined that he would like to know the strength of the faith of those women who insisted going to Sabarimala in order to comment on that. Social media picked up the actor’s statement and heaped criticism on him. According to them Prithviraj has fallen from stature before their eyes for they have been thinking of him as a ‘progressive’ man. Some even said they would never watch his movies again. However, a lot of people think that Prithviraj has said the right thing because the women who insist going to Sabarimala are ‘activists’.
Lokakeralam feels that it is an over-reaction by the people. Prithviraj’s comment has to be seen in its context. He has said elsewhere in the interview that as he grows older he seems to be losing faith in religions. But by habit he still goes to temples and churches. Even he worships at home. That means, faith in religion should be a private affair. It has to be treated so and there shouldn’t be any brouhaha over it. If one has faith she could go and if she doesn’t have, the temples should be left alone. What Prithviraj has missed out is the complex social discourse that ensued after the Supreme Court Rule that upheld the right of women of menstruating age to visit Sabarimala. He has approached the issue two dimensionally and suggested an ‘easy’ solution to the problem.
Prithviraj’s opinion is absolutely fine as it is an extremely private view and he has not said anything particularly offensive nor has he said anything to support the so called ‘believers’ in god. As a thinking actor who has articulated his stance on social issues unambiguously Prithviraja has to be given a chance of doubt as he wouldn’t shoot loose cannons on a very sensitive issue. Prithviraj had taken stringent stance against actor Dileep who was accused of masterminding the molestation of a female colleague. Also he had said that he would not deliver any dialogue which was meant to demean women. His critical stance against the omnipotent film organization AMMA during the Dileep issue was applauded by the social media and the public in general.
Hence, Prithviraj has to be left alone. Release of his film ‘Ayyappan’, a super hero fantasy saga is awaited.
