S.Rajendran is one casualty of his own making and we should not forget that there are many such arrogant and faulty legislators who have gone scot-free. It is important for the CM to do the right thing in their cases too. People may forget all good deeds but history would never, says JohnyML
The CPM led Kerala Government has done it once again! In its efforts to do the right thing in the most turbulent times of its history, Government of Kerala has turned its rudder towards justice by filing a sub-petition at the Kerala High Court against the misconduct of the Devikulam MLA, Mr.S.Rajendran to a female Sub-Collector Dr.Renu Raj when she went to stop an illegal construction done against the court’s work stop order. The MLA had allegedly addressed her in an inappropriate fashion and had derided her for the alleged inefficiency. The righteous officer was not ready to succumb to the MLA’s arrogance.
Contrary to the expectations of the MLA who is also a member of the ruling Communist Party of India Marxist (CPM), the party leadership has decided to take stringent action against the unruly law maker, sending clear warning signals to all those party leaders and the cadres who are generally notorious for their chauvinistic behavior. In fact the Chief Minister Mr.Pinarayi Vijayan has been proving himself to be a ‘People’s Leader’ with pro-women approach though there have been allegations against him for not taking strong actions against certain religious leaders from the minority communities for severe allegations of rape by the victims.
Pinarayi Vijayan stole the thunder when he could manage to bring the progressive caste groups, Dalit formations and progressive women from all the walks of life against the menace of social sabotage by the right wing fascist groups in a mass mobilization of women called ‘Vanitha Mathil’ or ‘Wall of Women’ on 1st January 2019. Besides, despite all opposition the Chief Minister could create a situation for the women who had decided to visit the Sabarimala Temple. His speech during the Sabarimala crisis is now hailed as the Renaissance Speech where he had conveyed the right messages through a carefully constructed oration.
Today, with Pinarayi Vijayan’s growing influence and charisma, and above all the statesmanship that he has shown in roping in all the caste and Dalit groups in the newly formed Renaissance Committee, a new political scenario has been written in Kerala. The most visible factor is the co-optation of the Dalit dissenting to the advantage of the CPM led government. With the clever allocation of social visibility to the dissenting leaders of the Dalit and minority groups, Pinarayi Vijayan has killed two birds with one stone; one, the near co-optation of the most progressive and rebellious voices of the Dalit movements to the government’s side, two, building up a large resistance against the right wing forces proving once again the left’s progressive credentials.
However, the Chief Minister needs to make a few more moves to make his progressive vision clear and actions pragmatic. First of all he should be able to take legal actions against the bully legislators like PC George. He should also prevent his cabinet colleagues from making the wrong statements especially regarding women and their social visibility and status. With most of the people in Kerala realizing today that the left led government could be the only alternative in the coming days, it is imperative for the Chief Minister to hold his reign well and tight and lead the government to the just direction with Renaissance values in mind. S.Rajendran is one casualty of his own making and we should not forget that there are many such arrogant and faulty legislators who have gone scot-free. It is important for the CM to do the right thing in their cases too. People may forget all good deeds but history would never.
